Robert McCloskey, specifically for his work in "Make Way for Ducklings" and "Blueberries for Sal". I think he fell off some in "One Morning in Maine" but 'Clam chowder for lunch' may be one of the great lines in American Literature!

I've been pondering this for a bit and realized not only are there so many options to choose from, but most of the people who are possible choices I have barely read.

Then I had to decide: greatest for impact on writing in general (Virginia Woolf style) or on just plain enjoyable (Raymond Chandler, Arthur Conan Doyle). Of course there were the poets (Wilfred Owen, Auden, et dozens).

I ended up with Graham Greene for having the best mix and breadth.

P G Wodehouse. Great humorist. I heard a rumor that he would type out all the pages to a story and hang them around the room, at eye level if he found them funny, and lower down if they lacked something. Then he would work page by page getting them all to eye level before he considered a story finished.

Bill Watterson. No question about it.
